The States Project is an organization with a singular focus on building and preserving Democratic majorities in state legislatures, a mission based on the observation that state legislatures often have a greater and more direct impact on citizens’ lives than either Congress or the President.
As we all know, state legislatures have been in the forefront of the battles over reproductive rights and environmental protection, voting rights and LGBTQ+ safety, gun control and school curricula. Changing state legislative chambers from red to blue not only results in more progressive policies but also helps protect the integrity of all elections – state and federal.
In the 2022 election cycle, the States Project helped fuel Democratic wins in, for example, Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, where they were the largest donor (by far) to Democratic candidates. They also worked directly with state legislative caucuses and the candidates themselves, providing funding as well as training in running campaigns, strategic district-specific research and communication, assistance in recruiting campaign staff, voter outreach and more.
Finally, the States Project not only helps Democratic candidates run better-funded and more effective campaigns, but also provides progressive policy resources and tools to state lawmakers committed to improving their constituents’ lives. In other words, they continue to support Democratic state lawmakers both before and AFTER the elections.
