Katie Porter was first elected to the US House of Representatives in Orange County, District 45 in 2018, becoming the first Democrat to represent this district since 1953. After redistricting, she won re-election two years later in District 47, serving in Congress from 2019-2025. While in the House of Representatives, Porter served as Deputy Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She was known for her pointed questioning of business leaders and public officials, often using a white board during the questioning. Her oversight in the early days of the pandemic secured free COVID testing from the Trump Administration for all Americans. Porter wrote new laws that cracked down on health insurers wrongfully denying care and saved patients thousands of dollars from Big Pharma’s unreasonable price hikes. She was also a leader on disaster preparedness and response, passing bills that would raise firefighter pay and strengthen mental health treatment for first responders. In 2024, Porter chose not to run for re-election, instead entering the contest for the Senate seat formerly held by Dianne Feinstein, focusing her campaign on tackling the high cost of housing.

Recently, Porter rejoined the UC Irvine School of Law faculty, where she is teaching courses on legislation and secured transactions. While a professor at UCI previously, she was appointed to be California’s independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, I Swear: Politics Is Messier Than My Minivan. A single mom of three school-aged kids, she lives with her family in Irvine, California.
