Featured speaker is Betty Yee, former California State Controller and current candidate for Governor. After two terms on the California Board of Equalization (BOE), Yee was elected as California’s Controller in Nov. 2014 and re-elected in 2018, earning over eight million votes, a record for California. As Controller of then the world’s fifth largest economy, she chaired the Franchise Tax Board and served on both the boards of the California State Public Employee’s Retirement System and the California State Teacher’s Retirement System, with a combined portfolio of more than $800 billion.
During her tenure as Controller, Yee’s campaign says she and her audit team uncovered $7.3 billion in misspending. As chair and member of the State Lands Commission, she led the shuttering of the last oil platform in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Earlier, on the BOE, Yee’s campaign says she spearheaded initiatives to tackle the underground economy and, working in collaboration with other state enforcement agencies, took on multinational corporations that attempted to skirt paying their fair share of taxes. This work on the BOE resulted in Amazon now collecting and remitting sales tax to the state. Yee’s team also worked to modernize the tax code, which helped lay the legal groundwork for U.S. Supreme Court decisions advancing marriage equality as the law of the land.
Yee served as Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party from 2021 to 2025. She currently serves on the nonprofit boards of Ceres, a national sustainability organization, and the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, a national leadership organization.
