In February of 2019, David Hochschild was appointed Chairman of the Energy Commission by Governor Newsom. There are five seats on the California Energy Commission. By law, those who fill four of these seats must have specialized training in one of these areas: engineering or physical science, environmental protection, economics, and law. Hochschild fills the environmental seat.
Before his appointment, Hochschild worked in both public service and in the private sector. In 2001, he served as special assistant to San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. While in this position, he launched a citywide initiative to install solar panels on public buildings. He later cofounded VoteSolar, an advocacy group which promotes solar policies for local, state and federal governments. His first appointment to the Energy Commission came in 2013. Hochschild received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Swarthmore College and a Master of Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
