As a Chancellor’s Public School Scholar, David Evan Harris is part of a UC Berkeley program which focuses on connecting university studies with the real-world community with an emphasis on American Cultures courses. Harris teaches at the Haas School of Business; his courses include AI Ethics, Social Movements and Social Media and Civic Technology among other related topics. He is an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS); Center for Latin American Studies; Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL); and the Business and Public Policy Group at UC Berkeley.
For nearly five years, Harris worked at Meta, the company which operates Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp among other social media platforms. He supervised work on AI, focusing on fairness and accountability. Some of the topics his teams explored were hate speech, misinformation, harassment and online safety. Harris has a BA, Political Economy of Environment & Development from UC Berkeley and an MS in Sociology from University of São Paulo, Brazil.
