Arlie Hochschild is a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research work has focused on the emotions that lie beneath moral beliefs and practices. Her research has brought her to various social worlds in an effort to understand how private troubles and cultural norms have influenced public issues. She is the author of ten books. Her latest, Stolen Pride, was chosen by Barack Obama as one of his ten favorite books of 2024. Her 2016 book, Strangers in Their Own Land, was a finalist for the National Book Award.
