On Monday April 13, 2026, in Peacock Hall from 1:00 – 3:30 pm, the Democratic Club will feature the film The Candidate, which honors Robert Redford, who offers an assured and appealing performance. In fact, critics agree that Redford’s acting talents are on display in what critics called “a virtuoso performance” in what is regarded as a superb political film.
In The Candidate, which is both a political drama and a satirical comedy, Redford plays Bill McKay, an affable and idealistic liberal political novice and candidate for the U.S. Senate from California. The handsome lawyer and son of a former California governor, McKay fully expects to lose; therefore, he’s able to run on a platform of pure integrity, to reveal how out of touch the current senator has become.
Vincent Canby, a New York Times film critic wrote: “The Candidate is one of the few good, truly funny American political comedies ever made.” Although this film is clearly anchored firmly in its own time, being released in June 1972, it remains relevant today. Its portrayal of election politics seems plausible as the film seems remarkably frank in its depiction of the system.
Still, what viewers will likely clearly remember is Redford’s sympathetic portrayal of a good man seduced by the mere prospect of power. Jeremy Lerner’s Oscar winning screenplay provides a metaphorical voyage into the sea of politics; the result is a fascinating narrative film that sometimes feels like a documentary movie.
The Candidate runs for an hour and 42 minutes and provides subtitles. Film enthusiast Lynne Thorner will facilitate a post-viewing discussion regarding the relevance of this film. Please direct any questions or concerns to Lynne at [email protected].
