Event Description

On Monday, May 6, at 3:00pm in MPR 2, the Democrats of Rossmoor book club will discuss two small books by Sarah Johnson: Breaking the Ice Ceiling, How the Icelandic Woman’s Day Strike Shattered Patriarchy and UBI and Beyond, Creating an Equitable Future.

Of the first book the publisher writes: “Breaking the Ice Ceiling: How the Icelandic Women’s Day Strike Shattered Patriarchy is a captivating book that explores the impact of the Icelandic Women’s Day Strike on gender equality and women’s rights. This strike, which took place in 1975, was a momentous event that changed the course of history for women in Iceland and beyond. The strike saw 90% of Icelandic women withdraw from paid and unpaid work, effectively bringing the country to a standstill.”  The book is 40 pages long and cost $6.45 in paperback and $6.99 in Kindle format.

Of the second book the publisher writes: “In UBI and Beyond: Creating an Equitable Future, readers will discover a compelling case for Universal Basic Income (UBI) funded by technology and automation profits as a means to tackle income insecurity, inequality, and social exclusion. With a thorough analysis of historical and contemporary UBI programs, economic and social arguments in favor of UBI, and addressing common criticisms and misconceptions, this book presents a comprehensive view of UBI as a practical and morally just solution to the challenges of the digital age.”  The book is 42 pages long. The Kindle edition costs $2.99 and the paperback $9.24.

Membership in the Democratic Club is not required to attend the book club and all are welcome, especially newcomers to Rossmoor who would like to meet a very nice group of eager readers.
