Event Description

Rossmoor residents and friends are cordially invited to attend the August Film Program sponsored by Rossmoor’s Democratic Club in Peacock Hall on August 12, 2024, at 1:00pm. The historical drama, Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), which was written, directed and stars George Clooney, portrays how the broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow attempts to bring down Senator Joseph McCarthy.

In the early 1950’s, the threat of Communism created paranoia in America, and exploiting those fears was Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. However, CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow (Strathairn) and his producer Fred W. Friendly (Clooney) decide to challenge McCarthy and expose him for the fear monger he was.

Beautifully directed by Clooney, the film presents a powerful message that remains relevant and timely today. Filmed in tight frames of black and white, and interspersing actual footage, the movie effectively dramatizes the smoke-filled atmosphere of broadcast journalism and television in the 1950’s. Roger Ebert and other film critics agree that “This movie manifests remarkable direction, paramount performances, and camera angles which made the cold war motif extremely authentic!”

The movie runs 95 minutes and provides subtitles. Film enthusiast Lynne Thorner will facilitate a post-viewing discussion that explores the timely themes dramatized in today’s featured film. Please direct any questions or concerns to Lynne at [email protected]
